Iron Stains & Metallic Taste

  • Orange, rust, or brown staining on fixtures, tubs, and toilets
  • Rust ring or sludge in the toilet tank
  • Metallic taste or smell
  • Stained laundry
  • Clogged aerators or fixtures from iron buildup

Iron levels vary widely from one well to the next — even on the same road. That’s why we start with a water test before recommending equipment.

Why Softeners Aren’t Enough for High Iron

Water softeners are built for hardness. They can tolerate only small amounts of iron. When iron is high enough to stain, a softener alone usually fails — resin fouls, staining continues, and homeowners think “the softener doesn’t work.”

For staining-level iron, an oxidizing iron filter (or similar iron-removal approach matched to your chemistry) is the right tool. Hardness can still be handled with a softener after or alongside iron treatment when the test shows both problems.

We install standard, serviceable systems — not proprietary locked-in equipment.

Iron and Sulfur Together

Rotten-egg smell (hydrogen sulfide) often shows up with iron. Softeners don’t fix sulfur. Many homes need iron and sulfur treatment as a pair, sometimes with a softener for hardness.

Test First, Then Size the Filter

Iron chemistry isn’t identical in every well. Levels, form of iron, and whether sulfur is present all change the recommendation. Maglothin sizes filtration from your water test and explains what the system will — and won’t — do.

We’ve treated iron in local well water for 15 years. No proprietary lock-in. Upfront pricing. If hardness is also high, we can pair iron treatment with a softener. If drinking taste at the kitchen tap is the remaining goal after whole-house work, RO may be next.

Iron Filter FAQ

Can a water softener remove iron stains?

Only very low iron. Staining-level iron usually needs dedicated iron filtration. We test first.

Do you treat iron and sulfur together?

Often yes — many local wells have both. We’ll confirm with a test and recommend only what’s needed.

Do you use proprietary iron systems?

No. Maglothin installs standard, serviceable equipment without lock-in.

How long have you treated iron in well water?

15 years treating well water for iron, sulfur, softeners, and testing across our service area.
